KUALA LUMPUR , MALAYSIA: Don’t know how to dispose off old handphones, batteries and chargers?
Bring them to the Green Fest at the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia in Kepong this Sunday.
There will be two recycle bins for mobile phones and other accessories, courtesy of Nokia (M) Sdn Bhd under its “Take-back” campaign.
It isn’t just your mobile phone that can be recycled; chargers, batteries and other phone accessories will be accepted, too.
Nokia product marketing specialist Nellie Abdullah said the campaign, which has been held since 2001, also accepts other brands.
“We want to encourage consumers to take that social responsibility to protect the environment,” she said.
At the moment, there are 30 recycling bins in Nokia centres, retail outlets and in some Celcom and Maxis centres in Peninsular Malaysia.
“I think the problem is that there isn’t enough awareness and education about electronic waste. We want to avoid disposing such waste in landfills – toxic waste in the area could lead to leachate, which is hazardous to people,” she said.
Nellie said that 900kg of recyclable material was collected last year alone.
Those who bring their mobile phones to the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia this Sunday will receive Nokia freebies as appreciation for their concern for the environment.
To find out where else you can dispose your mobile phone and accessories, visit the Nokia website at www.nokia.com.
The site will also inform viewers where the recycle bins are located.
